Cool Aid Helps People Find Work

May 30, 2019

When Jim was in the grip of an addiction he was homeless, he felt alone and he thought he could never win the race to quit. Today he has a full-time job with End of the Roll Discount Carpet & Flooring and is securely housed.

What happened?

Jim faced his addiction and began his healing journey at Anawim House, a sober house in Victoria for men in recovery. We met him at Cool Aid when he volunteered at our REES Support Services and delivered food to our housing and shelter programs.

Beyond Cool Aid’s operation of 15 supportive and affordable apartment buildings and three shelters, Cool Aid offers health and dental care, and services to support men and women who are making improvements in their lives. A critical part of those support services is the Community Casual Labour Pool where people are helped to find work.

Working with Cool Aid’s Labour Pool provided Jim with the opportunity to meet the owners and managers at End of the Roll, who appreciated his casual labour so much that they later offered him a full-time job.

The Labour Pool matches individuals looking for short-term work placements, like Jim, with employers and homeowners seeking their services. It is a free service for both the employers and workers.

Using the Community Casual Labour Pool ensures that you have skilled and experienced workers to get your job done. We do this by carefully screening candidates for you. We determine what skills, abilities and experience they have and provide support to ensure that placements are successful.

Labour Pool workers can assist you with tasks such as gardening, cleaning, moving, general labour, construction, building maintenance, retail sales, office work and much more. The service is free and friendly and we can find you help in a hurry.

Today Jim is working, paying taxes, volunteering and building new relationships. He says, “It’s organizations like Cool Aid that give people hope and a means to get back on their feet.”
